Dr. Anita’s Love of Belonging (4 of 4) | It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint

Updated: Jun 5, 2023

One of my most forward thinking clients are represented by members of the leadership team at Easterseals Southern California. They have incredible insights to share about the impacts of my webinars, and how collaborating with me has supported their work as an organization that has existed and focused on Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Accessibility for over 100 years.

At Easterseals Southern California, their goal is that people with disabilities are valued and included everywhere in our society – DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) becomes DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility)– and becomes part of the fabric of our workplace and our society.

Not just done to check the legal box, but as a regular practice. They have made tremendous progress in their belonging work here: they have listening circles within the organization; book clubs; advocacy and legislation work as well; webinars for employees on Subtle Acts of Exclusion which I was honored to design and facilitate.

What made this consultant/client partnership so rewarding was that they were intentional about making the time and space available for people across the org to do the work. Creating a truly safe space for sharing was crucial; learning what people wanted next; ongoing conversations that are still happening; people are asking more questions – what’s happening – how someone can get involved.

After 100 years, leadership, associates and mission all come together to be a learning organization. Most importantly, they have learned what they needed to unlearn – and they are now more equipped with tools to continue those conversations and work.
